In Islam, accountability is a cornerstone of faith, emphasizing that every deed will be judged on the Day of Judgment. This article explores the Islamic concept of accountability, highlighting the meticulous reckoning of actions, the roles of the Scale of Deeds, the Bridge of Sirat, and the eternal abodes of Paradise and Hell.
Through Quranic verses, Hadiths, and Islamic teachings, it underscores human responsibility, divine justice, and the profound mercy of Allah. From self-accountability to the vision of Allah, this article illuminates the belief that truth and justice will prevail, guiding believers toward righteous actions and eternal salvation.
The Certainty of Accountability and Judgment
Belief is that accountability is certain, and deeds will be judged.
In Sharh al-‘Aqa’id al-Nasafiyyah, page 104:
“And the book,” in which the obedience and sins of the servants are recorded, will be given to the believers in their right hands and to the disbelievers in their left hands and behind their backs. This is true, as indicated by the saying of Allah, the Exalted:
وَنُخْرِجُ لَهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ كِتَـٰبًۭا يَلْقَىٰهُ مَنشُورًا
“And We will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will find spread open.” (Qur’an Parah:15, Surah No: 17, Verse No:13)And His saying, the Exalted:
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًۭا يَسِيرًۭا
“So, whosoever is given his record of deeds in his right hand. Soon, an easy account will be taken from him.” (Qur’an Parah: 30, Surah: 84, Verse No: 7-8)
Denying accountability makes one a disbeliever.
In Manh al-Rawd al-Azhar li al-Qari, chapter on illness, death, and the Resurrection, page 195:
“Know that whoever denies the Resurrection, Paradise, Hell, the Scale (Mizan), the Bridge (Sirat), the Reckoning (Hisab), or the written records in which the deeds of the servants are recorded is a disbeliever, because their affirmation is established through the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah.”
And in Al-Shifa’, chapter on clarifying beliefs that constitute disbelief, Volume 2, page 290:
“Likewise, whoever denies Paradise, Hell, resurrection, the Reckoning, or the Resurrection itself is a disbeliever by consensus, as it is explicitly stated in the texts and unanimously transmitted by the Ummah through Tawatur (mass transmission).”
Some will be judged in such a way that they will be asked privately, “Did you do this and this?” They will reply, “Yes, O Lord!” Until they confess all their sins. At this point, they will think to themselves, “Now, I am doomed.” But Allah will say, “We concealed your faults in the world, and now We forgive them.”
From Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
“Indeed, Allah draws the believer close, covers him with His veil, and conceals him. Then He says: ‘Do you acknowledge such-and-such a sin? Do you acknowledge such-and-such a sin?’ The believer replies: ‘Yes, my Lord.’ This continues until he admits his sins and thinks that he is doomed. Then Allah says: ‘I concealed them for you in the world, and today I forgive them for you.’ Then he is given the record of his good deeds.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Oppressions, Chapter on the Saying of Allah: “Unquestionably, the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.” (Al Quran: Parah 12, Surah No: 11, Verse No: 18), Hadith 2441, Volume 2, Page 126).
For others, there will be harsh interrogation, questioning every deed in detail. Whoever is questioned in this way is destroyed.

Narrated by Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“There is no one who is taken to account except that he will be ruined.”
She said: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, may Allah make me your ransom! But does Allah not say: ‘“So, whosoever is given his record of deeds in his right hand. Soon, an easy account will be taken from him.” (Qur’an Parah: 30, Surah: 84, Verse No: 7-8)?”
He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “That is the presentation (of deeds), but whoever is scrutinized in the reckoning will be doomed.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Tafsir, Chapter: ‘Then he will be judged with an easy account’, Hadith 4939, Volume 3, Page 375).
In Fath al-Bari, Book of Heart-Softening Narrations, under Hadith 6536, regarding the statement “Whoever is scrutinized in the reckoning will be punished”, it states:
“What is meant by ‘scrutiny’ is a detailed and thorough accounting, where a person is held accountable for both major and minor deeds without leniency. It is said, ‘I scrutinized my right from him,’ meaning, ‘I sought it in full detail.’” (Fath al-Bari, Volume 11, Page 342).
Allah’s Reminder of Blessings and Consequences
To some, Allah will say, “O so-and-so! Did I not honor you? Did I not make you a leader? Did I not subject horses and camels for your service? Did I not grant you all these blessings?” And Allah will remind them of even more blessings. The person will respond, “Yes, You granted me all of this.” Allah will then say, “So, did you ever think you would meet Me?” The person will answer, “No.” Then Allah will declare, “Just as you forgot Us, We too abandon you to torment.”
The Testimony of Limbs on the Day of Judgment
Some disbelievers will face questioning differently. After being reminded of blessings, Allah will ask, “What did you do with them?” The person will reply, “I believed in You, Your Book, and Your Messengers. I prayed, fasted, gave charity, and performed all the good deeds I could.” Allah will say, “Very well, then wait. Witnesses will be brought against you.” The person will wonder, “Who will testify against me?” At that moment, their mouth will be sealed, and their limbs—their thighs, hands, feet, flesh, bones—will be commanded to speak. They will testify, “This person did such and such.” After this, the person will be thrown into Hell.
Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
The people asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Will we see our Lord on the Day of Judgment?”
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you have any difficulty in seeing the sun at noon when there are no clouds?”
They replied, “No.”
He said: “Do you have any difficulty in seeing the full moon on a clear night?”
They replied, “No.”
He said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will not have any difficulty in seeing your Lord just as you have no difficulty in seeing either of them.”
Then, a servant will be brought before Allah, and He will say:
“O so-and-so! Did I not honor you, make you a leader, give you a spouse, subjugate horses and camels for you, and allow you to rule and prosper?”
The servant will reply, “Yes, my Lord!”
Allah will ask: “Did you ever think you would meet Me?”
The servant will reply, “No.”
Allah will say: “Then today, I will forget you as you forgot Me.”
Then, another servant will be brought, and Allah will say:
“O so-and-so! Did I not honor you, make you a leader, give you a spouse, subjugate horses and camels for you, and allow you to rule and prosper?”
The servant will reply, “Yes, my Lord!”
Allah will ask: “Did you ever think you would meet Me?”
The servant will reply, “No.”
Allah will say: “Then today, I will forget you as you forgot Me.”
Then, a third servant will be brought and asked the same questions. But this time, the servant will say:
“O my Lord! I believed in You, in Your Book, and in Your Messengers. I prayed, fasted, and gave charity,” and he will praise Allah as much as he can.
Allah will say: “Now, We will bring Our witness against you.”
The servant will think to himself, “Who will testify against me?”
Then, his mouth will be sealed, and it will be said to his thighs, flesh, and bones: ‘Speak!’
So, his thighs, flesh, and bones will testify against him, revealing his deeds.
This will be done so that he cannot make excuses, and this is the hypocrite, the one upon whom Allah’s wrath will descend.
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Asceticism and Heart-Softening Narrations, Hadith 2968, Page 1587).
Paradise Without Reckoning
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “From my nation, seventy thousand will enter Paradise without reckoning. Each of them will intercede for seventy thousand more. Additionally, Allah will grant three other groups whose numbers only He knows.” Those who perform the Tahajjud (night) prayer will also enter Paradise without reckoning.
“Their sides become detached from their beds and they call upon their Lord, fearing and hoping, and they donate some from what We have provided them.” (Al Quran Parah No: 21, Surah No: 32, Verse No: 16).In Tafsir al-Tabari, Volume 10, p. 239, under this verse, it is narrated: Yunus reported to us, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zaid said regarding Allah’s statement, “Their sides forsake their beds,” that these are the ones who wake up at night for voluntary prayers (Tahajjud).
Narrated by Asma bint Yazid, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered on a single plain. A caller will call out, ‘Where are those whose sides would forsake their beds?’ They will stand up, and they will be few. They will enter Paradise without being held to account. Then the rest of the people will be called to account.”
(Shu’ab al-Iman, Chapter on Prayer, Tahsin al-Salah and Increasing It, Hadith 3244, Vol. 3, p. 169).In Mirqat al-Mafatih, Vol. 1, p. 194, under the phrase “forsake their beds,” it is explained: “This refers to leaving their bedding and resting places. The majority of scholars hold that this refers to the Tahajjud prayer (voluntary night prayer).”
Among this nation will be a person with ninety-nine scrolls of sins, each extending as far as the eye can see. All will be opened, and Allah will ask, “Do you deny any of this? Did My noble recording angels wrong you?” The person will reply, “No, O Lord.” Then Allah will ask, “Do you have any excuse?” The person will answer, “No, O Lord.” Allah will say, “Indeed, you have one good deed in Our presence, and you will not be wronged today.” At this point, a slip of paper will be brought forward, inscribed with:
“Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu”
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ“I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and Muhammad is His servant and messenger”.
Allah will say, “Go and place this on the scale.” The person will exclaim, “O Lord, what is this slip compared to all these scrolls?” Allah will reply, “You will not be wronged.” When the scale is weighed, the scrolls of sins will be outweighed by the slip of faith. Indeed, Allah’s mercy knows no bounds; even the smallest deed becomes significant through His grace.
From Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Ma‘afiri, then al-Hubali, who said:
I heard ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As say:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
“Indeed, Allah will select a man from my nation before all creation on the Day of Judgment. Then, ninety-nine scrolls will be spread before him, each scroll as far as the eye can see.
Then, Allah will say: ‘Do you deny any of this? Have My recording angels wronged you in any way?’
The man will reply: ‘No, my Lord!’
Allah will ask: ‘Do you have any excuse?’
He will reply: ‘No, my Lord!’
Allah will say: ‘Indeed, you do! You have a good deed with Us, and today you will not be wronged.’
Then, a small card will be brought out, in which it is written:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
“I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and Muhammad is His servant and messenger”.Allah will say: ‘Bring forth your weight (for judgment).’
The man will respond: ‘O Lord! What is this small card in comparison to these scrolls?’
Allah will reply: ‘You will not be wronged.’
Then, the scrolls will be placed on one side of the scale and the small card on the other. The scrolls will be light, and the card will be heavy, for nothing outweighs the Name of Allah.
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Book of Faith, Chapter: What Has Been Narrated About One Who Dies While Testifying That There Is No God but Allah, Hadith 2648, Volume 4, Pages 290–291).
Records of Deeds: Right Hand vs. Left Hand
On the Day of Judgment, every person will be given their record of deeds. The righteous will receive theirs in their right hand, while the wicked will be handed theirs in their left hand. As for the disbeliever, their chest will be torn open, and their left hand will be twisted behind their back to receive their record.
“And whoever is given his record of deeds from behind his back. Soon he will ask for death. And (he) will go into the blazing Fire.”
(Qur’an Surah No: 84, Verse No: 10-12)In Al-Jami’ li Ahkam al-Qur’an by Al-Qurtubi, Volume 10, Page 192, under this verse:
Ibn Abbas said: “He will extend his right hand to receive his record, but an angel will pull it away, dislocating his right hand. Then he will take his record with his left hand from behind his back.”
Qatadah and Muqatil said: “His chest bones and ribs will be broken apart, then his left hand will be forced through his back, emerging from behind him, and he will receive his record in this manner.”
The Pond of Kawthar: A Gift to the Prophet (ﷺ)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was granted the Pond of Kawthar.
From Anas ibn Malik:
He recited this verse: “إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ Indeed, We have granted you Al-Kawthar.” (Qur’an Surah Parah: 30, No: 108, Verse No: 1)Then he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have been given Al-Kawthar.”
(Al-Musnad by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith 13579, Volume 4, Page 491).
In another narration:
From Anas: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have been given Al-Kawthar, and it is a river flowing across the surface of the earth.”(Al-Musnad by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith 12544, Volume 4, Page 305).
Its expanse equals a month’s journey, and its banks are adorned with domes of pearls. It is perfectly square, with all angles equal. The soil of its floor is pure musk. Its water is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and more fragrant than musk. Vessels, more numerous than the stars. Whoever drinks from it will never feel thirsty again.
“Whoever drinks from it will never thirst again.”
Al-Musnad* by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith 23377, Volume 9, Page 89
Two streams from Paradise constantly replenish it—one of gold and the other of silver.
The Scale of Deeds: Weighing Good and Evil

The Scale (Mizaan) is real.
In Manh al-Rawd al-Azhar, page 95:
“The weighing of deeds on the scale on the Day of Judgment is a reality, as Allah Almighty says:
‘And on that Day, weighing is to certainly take place; those whose scales became heavy are therefore the successful. And those whose scales became light are only those who put their souls at loss; the recompense of those injustices which they used to do with Our verses’ (Qur’an, Parah No: 8, Surah No: 7, Verse No:8-9)
This demonstrates the perfection of grace and the beauty of justice, as Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:
وَنَضَعُ ٱلْمَوَٰزِينَ ٱلْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌۭ شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ وَإِن كَانَ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍۢ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ أَتَيْنَا بِهَا ۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِنَا حَـٰسِبِينَ
‘And We will the scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection, no soul will therefore be wronged in the least. And if there be anything even equal to a mustard seed, We will henceforth bring it, and We are Sufficient to take account.’ (Qur’an, Parah No: 17, Surah No: 21, Verse No: 47)”
Upon it, the good and evil deeds of individuals will be weighed. A heavy scale symbolizes being raised upward, unlike in worldly matters, where heavier objects sink downward.
Al Quran Parah No: 22, Surah No: 35, Verse No: 10
Towards only Him ascends the pure speech, and He raises high the pious deed.
Maqam e Mahmood & Liwa ul Hamd
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be granted the Praised Station (Maqam-e-Mahmood), a station of unparalleled honor.
Al Quran, Parah No: 15, Surah No: 17, Verse No: 79
It is near that your Lord may make you stand on a station where everyone may praise you.
On that day, all creation will praise and glorify him, from the first to the last. He will also be given the Banner of Praise (Liwa-ul-Hamd), under which all believers, from Prophet Adam to the last person, will gather.
The Bridge of Sirat: Crossing Over Hell
The Bridge of Sirat is truth. It will be placed over Hell, finer than a strand of hair and sharper than a sword.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Musnad of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Hadith: 24847, Vol. 9, p. 415
“Hell has a bridge thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword.”
This bridge is the path to Paradise. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will cross first, followed by other Prophets, then this nation (Prophet Muhammad’s), and finally other communities. Depending on their deeds, people will cross at different speeds. Some will pass like lightning, others like the wind, birds, galloping horses or running humans. Some will crawl or drag themselves, while others will be seized by the hooks hanging from either side of the bridge. Some will be wounded yet saved, while others will fall into Hell.
The Prophet’s Plea for His Ummah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) will stand at the bridge’s edge, pleading with Allah for his sinful followers, saying, “O Lord, save them! Save them!”
“And your Prophet will be standing on the Sirat (bridge over Hell), saying: ‘O Lord, grant safety, grant safety.'”
Sahih Muslim, Book of Faith, Chapter on the Lowest Rank of the People of Paradise, Hadith: 329, p. 127
On that day, he will be present at every stage—at the Scale, the Pond of Kawthar, and the Bridge of Sirat—interceding for his nation.
The Day of Judgment: Trials and the Vision of Allah
The Day of Judgment will span fifty thousand years, filled with countless trials.
Al Quran, Parah No: 29, Surah No: 70, Verse No: 4
on a Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years (according to the worldly calculation of time)
However, for Allah’s chosen servants, the day will pass as quickly as the time it takes to perform one obligatory prayer—or even less. For some, the entire day will pass in the blink of an eye. “The matter of the Hour is like the blink of an eye or even closer.”
The greatest blessing for the believers on that day will be seeing Allah. No joy can compare to this. Whoever is granted this vision once will be eternally captivated, never forgetting it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be the first to see Allah Almighty.
Paradise and Hell: Eternal Abodes
After the trials of Judgment, people will proceed to their eternal abodes. Paradise (Jannah) is the abode of eternal comfort and bliss, without limits to its pleasures. Hell (Jahannam) is the abode of perpetual torment and suffering, with no end to its pain.
Fundamental Beliefs in Resurrection and Afterlife
Belief in the existence of Paradise and Hell is fundamental. Denial of their existence is disbelief.
In Al-Hadiqah Al-Nadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 303:
“Whoever denies the Resurrection, Paradise, or Hell… is deemed a disbeliever for rejecting what has been established by Quranic texts, authentic prophetic hadiths, and the consensus of the righteous Ummah.”In Al-Shifa’, Vol. 2, p. 290:
“Likewise, whoever denies Paradise or Hell… is a disbeliever by consensus, as it has been explicitly stated in the texts and unanimously transmitted by the Ummah in a mutawatir (massively transmitted) manner.”
Paradise and Hell were created long ago and are currently in existence. They will not be created anew on the Day of Judgment.
Misinterpretation and Denial: A Warning
Belief in the Resurrection, Judgment, Accountability, Reward, Punishment, Paradise, and Hell must align with the meanings understood by Muslims. Misinterpreting these concepts (e.g., calling reward the joy of good deeds or punishment the sorrow of bad deeds, or claiming the resurrection is only spiritual) is equivalent to denial and disbelief.
May Allah grant us salvation from the terrors of the Day of Judgment through the intercession of this noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and admit us to eternal Paradise. Ameen.
